Safe Clean Up Tips After a Storm

7/8/2021 (Permalink)

Storm Damage in Cuyahoga County If you need storm damage repair in Cuyahoga South, call SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South today!

A storm has just blown through, but thankfully you and your family took precautions and no one was harmed. However, there is still a chance something happened in your home, whether it be flooding, backed up sewage, or damage from falling debris. If there’s any major damage to your Cuyahoga Southhome, the best thing you can do is call the experts at SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South and let the professionals clean up, but there are still some things you can do yourself if you feel up to it.

  • Clean up sticks and branches that may have fallen during the storm. This one is by far the easiest, and the branches can easily be thrown away, or used for something like firewood or compost. If a branch or tree has fallen against your house and caused damage, go ahead and call SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South to have it quickly, and expertly repaired.
  • Dry out your house as soon as possible. After a storm, if water has gotten inside your home, it will very quickly cause mold to grow, which will create many issues down the road. It’s best to clean up any standing water and dry off surfaces that may grow mold. If some time has passed and you suspect mold may already be growing, using a bleach-based household cleaning solution can kill the mold and prevent further damage.
  • If you see any damage involving sewage, live wires, or possible gas leaks, don’t try and fix it yourself! Immediately call the experts at SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South to solve this issue for you.

The most important thing you can do is be safe, and call someone for help if you feel unqualified for an after storm clean up.

Easy Steps to Preventing Kitchen Fires

7/7/2021 (Permalink)

Cooking safely is the most important step of fire prevention! Following the best cooking practices prevents you from needing fire damage restoration in your Cuyahoga South home!

Cooking Fire Safety

Cooking is essential, but if done carelessly, it can be devastating. The best way to ensure your safety and the safety of your Cuyahoga South property is to be aware of the best, safest cooking practices.

  1. Always Be Present When Food Is Cooking

Never leave cooking food unattended. If something goes wrong and you’re not there to immediately remedy the situation, things get out of control very quickly. The National Fire Protection Association reported that of the 172,900 fires between 2014 and 2018, 31% of them were because equipment was left unattended. If you have work you need to do, consider setting up a computer in your kitchen so that you can always be close by.

  1. Keep Children Away from the Stove

While this is especially important when cooking, it is also vital even when nothing is being prepared. Kids love to play with things, and often it’s harmless, but with how dangerous stoves can be to unsuspecting children, it’s better if they’re kept away from them entirely. Talking with any children in the house about not touching the stove is vital for everyone’s safety.

  1. Regular Cleaning

In the day to day of cooking, it’s easy for small pieces of food or other debris to fall into the stovetop, or in the oven. While none of these food scraps individually are an issue, a buildup of them can be the perfect kindling for a kitchen fire. Thankfully, cleaning your oven or stove top is a simple task you can do in just a few minutes.

  1. Keeping Appliances in Order

It might not even be your stove where a fire starts, but rather one of your appliances. With so many appliances in kitchens today, from rice cookers, microwaves, slow cookers, and so on, it’s easy to run out of outlets. However, when this happens, DO NOT plug in an extension cord. With knives, water, and constant commotion in kitchens , it’s too easy for something to go wrong and water to get into an extension cord and cause a short circuit, and possibly a fire.

Following these easy four steps can prevent you from needing a Cuyahoga South based fire cleanup and restoration company. However, if you find yourself in need of fire damage restoration in Cuyahoga South, give SERVPRO a call!

Tips for Being Safe During a Storm

7/7/2021 (Permalink)

Rain beats down on Cuyahoga South If you need water or storm damage restoration in Cuyahoga South, call SERVPRO today!

Over the past few weeks, there have been several storms in the Cuyahoga South area, and with storms comes a risk of personal and property damage. In order to keep yourself safe during storms, there are a few steps to take.

  • Go indoors and stay there. This can be inside your home or the home of a neighbor. If you’re outdoors somewhere without many houses around, such as a park or the lake, try and seek shelter in a nearby building. Parks should have public restrooms, and these are often built to be storm proof. Should there be no other options, the best thing to do is to shelter in your car and wait out the storm.
  • Once you’re indoors, move to somewhere away from windows. Many homes have a basement, which is the safest place to wait out storms. If your house doesn’t have a basement, bathrooms are often a good choice as well.
  • Try to stay away from appliances and avoid activities such as showering or talking on a wired phone. Lightening can travel through plumbing fixtures or home wiring, so it’s best to avoid using things like washers and dryers during a storm. Additionally, if there is a lightning strike, it could cause those appliances to short and catch fire.
  • After the storm has passed, remember to be careful walking around, watch out for things such as downed power lines and possibly damaged circuit breakers. If you smell gas, contact authorities immediately.

It might be an inconvenience to follow these steps, but the most important thing is to keep you and your family safe. If you find that a storm has caused damage, feel free to call SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South today and let the experts take care of it!

Quick Water Removal Can Reduce Damages

SERVPRO is “Faster to any size disaster,” and this quality provides many benefits for homeowners of waterlogged residences. When a pipe has burst apart, a tub has overflowed, or a drain backed up, your home needs to have that excess water removed as quickly as possible.

Homes in Independence, Solon and Strongsville that have excess water from disasters such as pipe failures and forgotten tubs dry out best when water removal services from SERVPRO are the first part of the entire process. Pumping out any water that is visible upon our arrival helps us gain a better visual so we can more easily assess the extent of the overall damage.

Larger amounts of porous materials require more aggressive drying methods than materials that are less porous. Our experience benefits homeowners in many kinds of disasters that can damage a home by giving us insight into how best proceed in almost any type of situation imaginable, and overflowing toilets and tubs, exploding water heaters, burst pipes, and flooding from natural sources are only a few of those catastrophes.

Removing water starts the process, but then we need to move toward removing the moisture that has escaped into the air through evaporation. This moisture can find its way into every part of your home and create problems later unless it is captured and removed. Dehumidifiers, heaters, air movers, and even open windows can work wonders when used together. Moisture meters provide us with a beginning reading of areas in your home that are compared to later readings, showing us our progress in drying out your home.

When dry, remaining problems can still exist, such as unusual odors. This is because odors are caused by particles, that although tiny, produce smells when they have been disturbed. We can rectify this problem with odor control methods. Other problems that can remain behind include over-stretched carpeting, and we can fix that problem, also.

Because floors are always saturated in a situation where standing water exists, we take great care in ensuring that these surfaces are completely dry. This prevents warping of wooden floors and sub-flooring. Otherwise, walking in your home may soon become hazardous for your family and guests.

In situations that have left your home partially submerged, call us, SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South at (440) 237-0077.

We can begin water removal efforts so that your home is once again as it should be, perfectly dry. Accidents can occur at all hours of the day and night, and because of this, we are always available to take your call.

Trim Trees to Prevent Storm Damage

4/12/2021 (Permalink)

Tree on home's roof Tree hits your home? Get it off quick to prevent further damage from wind and rain. Call SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South.

Each year, thunderstorms alone cause approximately $15 billion in property damage. Summer and spring seasons are the most vulnerable to these destructive and frightening storms.

There are several ways to prepare your property for the summer.

  1. Always have an emergency kit with these items that you probably already have in your house: flashlight, battery powered weather radio, extra batteries to fit each electronic, non-perishable foods, lots of bottled water, can opener, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, blankets, extra clothes, sturdy shoes or boots, clock or watch, whistle to signal for help, and any important personal items and documents.
  2. Know the safest structure of your home to go to during a severe storm such as a basement, underground cellar, or even the most inner part of your home away from windows.
  3. Get routine maintenance on your roof and the foundation. Cracks in the roof are the number one leading cause to flooding damage.
  4. Cut down any unwanted trees or limbs and get your trees trimmed before summer storm season. Trees and branches can fall on your property and damage the siding, windows, and roof.
  5. Contact your insurance company to be more familiar with your policy. Most home insurers do not cover flooding damage.
  6. Keep all expensive and favored possessions off the floor and away from low ground in case of flooding.
  7. Keep all patio furniture, grills, etc in doors before a summer storm hits. Do not forget to part your vehicles in the garage.
  8. Finally, take those summer storm warnings and alerts seriously, especially tornado warnings. Tornadoes can lead to total property loss and even death.

SERVPRO Technicians If you suffer fire damage call the experts at SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South

SERVPRO Techs Save Strongsville Homes Affected by Fire

Kitchen fires, which account for 44% of overall home fires, are among the least reported. This problem is exacerbated by how thoroughly soot affects surfaces by imbuing them with tough-to-remove stains and odors.

SERVPRO technicians can respond to Strongsville homes for damage restoration calls within hours of their call. Technicians use sophisticated tools, EPA-registered antimicrobials, and a scientific approach to ensure that homes are restored per Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standards.

How pH Factors into Fire Damage Cleanup

While lighter damages can be manually cleaned with dry cleaning sponges or HEPA filter vacuums, technicians must take pH levels into account when treating moderate to heavy fire damage stains and residues.

  • Most cleaning agents used are alkaline, meaning their pH is higher than 7. This includes household items like dish soap (pH 9) and baking soda (pH 10)
  • The neutral pH level is 7, the same as water
  • Alkalinity is neutralized by an equal amount of acidity and vice-versa when cleaning

Mold, need to know for my Solon Business

4/2/2021 (Permalink)

Hallway with Walls cut out This local school had Mold. They knew to call SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South

To Clear Your Solon Business of Active Mold, Call SERVPRO

How Quickly Can You Remove Mold?

SERVPRO provides thorough commercial mold remediation to your Solon businesses. How fast our technicians can accomplish that depends on how much mold and water are present. Mold spores only become active when there is enough moisture to ‘wake’ them from their inert state and begin expanding.

Is Mold Dangerous to My Employees and Customers?

Mold may cause some health effects but that is about it. If you can see or detect that distinctive musty odor, call us, and technicians can arrive at your Barberton workplace to begin remediation before it causes permanent damage to your building.

That is the real threat of active mold colonies as they grow and expand, individual spores extend hyphae to absorb food and water. With enough time, these hyphae can dig into drywall, ceiling tiles, even the wood that makes up wall framing and larger support structures. To stop the growth, our technicians search for any pools, leaks, and other sources of water. This starts the process of returning the mold to an inert state.

To remove the mold, our response team members carefully demolish the infested property, bag it for transport, and dispose of it outside the facility. Where the mold is only on the surface or has only slightly penetrated the surface, technicians use chemical agents to disinfect the affected surfaces and then scrape it off for disposal.

Is My Business Now Free of Mold?

No. Mold spores, especially when they are inert, are too small to see with the unaided eye. Fortunately, they are no more of a threat than common house dust when inert. The best way to keep your business free of active mold growth is to have SERVPRO periodically ensure there is no standing water or leaks inside your facility.

Snow and Cold Bring Frozen Pipes

1/31/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Truck in front of house Day or Night SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South will be there if you have damage from Broken Pipes.

Why Are Frozen Pipes Dangerous?

Frozen pipes are a problem for a couple of reasons. They can create an inconvenience but, more seriously, can cause major damage to your property.

  • Lack of Running Water– The most obvious danger of a frozen pipe is the inability to access running water. This can interfere with your tenant’s ability to do everyday tasks such as washing the dishes or taking a shower. It is a landlord’s responsibility to make sure his or her tenants have running water.
  • Potential to Burst- The second problem that can occur when a pipe freezes is that the pipe actually bursts. Once the actual water in the pipe freezes, pressure is created between the closed faucet and the blockage that can build up to a point that causes the pipe to explode. If the pipe bursts outside, this could also create dangerous slippery conditions while the temperatures are below freezing.

 Signs of Frozen Pipes

  • The Temperature Is Right- Pipes cannot freeze if it is not cold enough outside for them to do so. Water does not freeze when it is 60 degrees Fahrenheit outside, and neither do pipes. When the temperature falls to 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, you should begin to take precautions to prevent vulnerable pipes from freezing.
  • There Is Frost on the Pipe- For pipes that can actively be seen, such as those under sinks, you may be able to see frost that has accumulated on the exterior of the pipe. This can serve as a warning sign that the pipe is frozen before you ever try to turn on the faucet.
  • No Water Is Coming Out of the Faucet- Another sign that you may have a frozen pipe on your hands is lack of running water. If you or a tenant turn on a kitchen or bathroom faucet and only a slight trickle of water or no water at all comes out, the water pipe leading to the faucet may be frozen.
  • Strange Smells- A fourth potential sign of a blocked pipe is an odd smell coming from a faucet or drain. If the pipe is partially or completely blocked, the only way the odor can escape is back up in the direction of your property.

How Much Does a Frozen Pipe Cost to Fix?

It is very difficult to estimate the cost of fixing a frozen pipe because each situation is so unique. Two factors that play a huge role in cost are the location of the pipe and whether the pipe has burst.

If you are able to easily access the blockage, such as a pipe under a kitchen sink, you might be able to thaw the blockage for free using a hair dryer or hot rags.

If the blockage is buried in a wall, fixing the issue will become more expensive. You may spend a few hundred dollars cutting open sheetrock to find the problem or more than a thousand if you need to hire a plumber to find and thaw out the blockage.

If a frozen pipe bursts You have a flooding issue on your hands, you could be faced with thousands of dollars of damage. You will have to hire a plumber to fix the burst pipe and then you will have to deal with fixing any damage the water has caused inside your property. If you have the property insurance, they should help cover some of these costs. In cleaning up the mess the water will leave behind you can count on SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South. We are water cleanup experts.

Dealing with Fires

1/26/2021 (Permalink)

House after Fire SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South can help you get through the process should you ever deal with a Fire loss.

House Fires: How to prevent them and what to do if you experience one

Every day, 7 people die in house fires- most in homes that lack working smoke alarms. In less than 30 seconds a small flame can evolve into a colossal fire and become life threatening; in less than two minutes your home can be consumed by flames, producing toxic smoke and gases with temperatures hotter than your oven. Asphyxiation is the leading cause of fire deaths and surprisingly, heat is more dangerous than flames- Room temperature can reach 100° at floor level and a smoldering 600° at eye level. With that being said, smoke and toxic gases are responsible for more deaths than flames and heat.

Kitchen mishaps, electrical sparks, space heaters, playing with matches are all common causes of house fires. However, they are preventable:

  • Do not leave cooking unattended- More than 60% of kitchen fires begin on the stove. Also, do not use stove range to heat your home.
  • Keep grills at least 10 feet away from siding and out from under branches and roof overhangs.
  • Smoking is the leading cause of home fires. ALWAYS smoke outdoors, never in bed, and always use an ashtray, making sure butts are completely stubbed out.
  • NEVER smoke in a home where oxygen is used, even if it is turned off.
  • Replace all worn, old, or damaged appliance cords immediately. Frayed wires = fires!
  • Avoid having multiple appliances plugged into the same receptable and try not to run extension cords underneath rugs.
  • Keep combustible objects at least 3 feet away from portable heating devices, such as portable heaters- Make sure they have a thermostat control mechanism and will switch off automatically if the heater falls over.
  • Remove lint from dryer filter after every use.
  • Change heating and air conditioning filters regularly.
  • Avoid unattended/careless use of candles.
  • Portable generators should never be used indoors.
  • Make sure combustible and flammable liquids are kept away from any heat source.
  • Discuss at least two escape strategies with your family or housemates prior to a fire and designate a meeting spot that is a safe distance from the home.
  • A working smoke detector significantly increases chances of surviving a deadly fire. Place alarms on each floor of your house, even the basement, and if possible, in every bedroom. Test batteries monthly and replace them once a year. Replace the alarms themselves every 8-10 years.
  • *Contact your local fire department for information on obtaining alarms for people with functional needs, i.e. a vibrating or flashing alarm.
  • Have fire extinguishers on each level of the home and/or in fire-prone areas like the kitchen and near the fireplace. Check gauges often to make sure they have a proper charge.
  • Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic gas found in fumes from combustible fuel- it is potentially deadly as it has no odor, taste, or color. Install CO alarms in central locations on each floor of the home, especially outside sleep areas.

Although preventable, fires still occur and figuring out what to do afterward can be an incredibly stressful and overwhelming process; it can be hard to decide what to do first as your mind is running around in a million directions.

  • Immediately call 9-1-1! But make sure you are out of the house before doing so.
  • Call your insurance company. You will most likely receive calls from public adjusters and contractors trying to get your business. It is recommended you speak to no one but your insurance agent.

If you do not have homeowner’s insurance, your family and community might help you get back on your feet. Some organizations that may help are:

  • American Red Cross (ARC).
  • Salvation Army.
  • Religious organizations.
  • Public agencies, such as the public health department.
  • Community Groups.
  • State or municipal emergency services office.
  • Nonprofit crisis- counseling centers.
  • A fire in your home can cause serious damage to your home and many of your belongings may be badly damaged by flames, heat, smoke, and water. In order to fight the fire, firefighters may have broken windows and cut holes on the roof- Ask your agent or adjuster to recommend restoration companies, like SERVPRO, that can help with cleaning up soot or water damage, boarding up windows, and other construction.
  • Contact your landlord or mortgage lender as well as your credit card company to report any cards lost in the fire.
  • Check with an accountant or the IRS about special benefits for people recovering from fire loss.
  • Save undamaged items from any further destruction. Any items not damaged should be put in a safe place, such as a storage facility.

Handle burnt money as little as possible. If money is only partly burnt, you can take it to your regional Federal Reserve Bank to get it replaced or send it to the Treasury:

Bureau of Engraving and Printing

MCD/OFM, Room 344A

14th and C Streets SW

Washington, DC 20228

  • Fully cooperate with the insurance company’s investigation. When a fire claim is reported, it becomes top priority and in most cases the adjuster will be out to see the loss within 24 to 48 hours after receiving the claim.
  • Find somewhere to live if you home is unlivable. Most policies include “Loss of Use or Loss or Rents” coverage, which pays for shelter, food, and clothing you may need- Make sure to let local police know that the site will be vacant.
  • Do not enter your house or apartment unless the fire department says that it’s safe to do so. If utilities are unsafe, they will be turned off- Do not try to turn them on yourself.

After a fire, your sense of security may be lost, which can significantly disrupt the regularity of daily life and it can become difficult to take care of yourself with so many other anxieties preoccupying your mind. Experiencing such a tragic loss can take an emotional toll on you so pay attention to how you and your loved ones are handling stress, whether related to the fire or not. Make sure to get plenty of rest and ask for help if needed. Watch pets as well for any changes in their behavior. Scared animals often react by biting or scratching. Keep them out of the home until after the cleanup is done to keep them safe.

It is common to experience a variety of reactions such as:

  • Feeling physically or mentally drained.
  • Having difficulty making decisions or staying focused.
  • Becoming easily frustrated more frequently.
  • Becoming more argumentative with family and friends.
  • Feeling overly tired, sad, numb, lonely, or worried.
  • Undergoing changes in appetite or sleep patterns.

Try to accept whatever reactions you experience as most of them are temporary and should go away over time.  If the above reactions hang around for two weeks or longer is it suggested that you seek help from a medical professional.

Common Damage After A Fire.

1/26/2021 (Permalink)

Large apartment SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South can handle your commercial property big or small.

Common Types of Damage After A Fire

When a fire happens on your commercial property, firefighters and sprinkler systems will do everything they can to put the fire out. While this is definitely a good thing, it does create additional considerations for you during the restoration process. In the hours and days after a fire, water cleanup is just as important as removing smoke and fire damage for maintaining the value and integrity of your property. Here are some tips for dealing with common types of damage after a fire:

  1. Direct Fire Damage
Fire is an incredibly destructive force when allowed to reach high temperatures.Fire cleanup often requires property restorers to simply remove surfaces or items that have been burned. While some items are often possible to restore, electronics, roofing, and structural elements of a building may have to be replaced entirely at the expense of the insurer or property owner.
  2. Water Damage
Certain items and surfaces are more vulnerable to water damage than others. During the water cleanupphase of restoration, you should dry furniture and other relatively porous possessions as quickly as possible so that mold cannot colonize them. It is also critical that restorers remove any residual water left on your flooring, as this can infiltrate surfaces and cause mold and structural damage.
  3. Smoke Residue
Smoke can create residues that are both unpleasant to smell and damaging to your belongings. Smoke residue can build up in computers and other electronics, causing them to malfunction and short circuit. Electronics can often be saved through proper smoke cleanup so you should contact a restoration professional experienced in restoring the items you are worried about.
If you require a water cleanup after a fire in your Northeast Ohio commercial property, you may be concerned that your property will never be restored to its former glory. With the right help, of SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South, many of your things can likely be saved and protected from secondary damage caused by mold and decay.

Drying Wood Floors Fast in Strongsville

finished wooden flooring If you need professional wood floor drying in Cuyahoga, call SERVPRO of Cuyahoga County today!

Salvaging hardwood floors from water damage in Northeast Ohio

While most insurance policies offer coverage for replacing floors, there are many situations where homeowners can save money by drying instead, especially with solid hardwood. Other types of flooring, including engineered hardwood and laminate, are more prone to structural damage, delamination, and other issues that make replacement preferable. Solid hardwood's durability makes it more salvageable and safer to reinstall.  The durability saves you time and costs when it comes to reinstallation, staining, and refinishing.

If a sudden pipe leak causes water damage to floors in your Strongsville residence, professional disaster mitigation technicians at SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South can restore your flooring to its preloss condition. Commercial-grade equipment an eco-friendly, EPA-registered antimicrobial cleaners work in tandem to salvage floors, sub-flooring, and other structures in the home that are affected by water. Technicians always work with both homeowners and insurance adjusters to handle damages and restoration per local, state, and federal regulations.

SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South works fast not only to save flooring but also to preserve the layers of infrastructure that support it. Without proper mitigation, water damaged floors can become distorted and start cupping or buckling. These conditions can also become host to mold and wood rot that affect the safety and integrity of hardwood floors.  After dispatching a team to your home, they can use wand extractors and back-mounted pumps to collect any remaining standing water. Thermal imaging and penetrative and non-penetrative moisture measurement tools can be used to assess the extent of damage to floors and subfloors. We replace non-salvageable planks as needed.

Desiccant dehumidifiers are often necessary to tackle the remaining moisture in hardwood planks due to hardwood's low evaporation rate. These types of industrial dehumidifiers collect moisture from surrounding surfaces by passing it over desiccant materials like silica gel. Heat then evaporates the collected water into an air stream which vents outside of the home. If odors from water damage are evident, OSHA-approved cleaners and ultra low-volume (ULV) fogging deodorizers can be used to eliminate odor-causing particles.

Cuyahoga Book Club!

Woman reading books Owner Michal Fosdick reads the book she bought the entire team. Knowledge makes us better in our personal and professional lives she says!

Everything you read fills your head with new bits of information, and you never know when it might come in handy. The more knowledge you have, the better-equipped you are to tackle any challenge you’ll ever face.  The team at SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South takes this to heart as we started our first book club.  Our first book was the “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” by John Maxwell.

As we discussed the book weekly among our technicians, office staff and management we learned:

  • A person must always stand on solid ground. Stick to the rules you represent.  Honesty, Fairness and Good Judgement are the foundation.
  • Your co-workers must respect you, but that respect has to be earned on a constant basis. It’s important that you keep earning this respect over time.
  • Hating losing is a good thing – it keeps you focused on winning. Giving up and losing are not valid options.

Should you ever find yourself in dire circumstances, remember that although you might lose everything else—your job, your possessions, your money, even your health—knowledge can never be taken from you. That is what SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South teaches our team.  So if you needs us, we will be there to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

To serve our customers the best we can we teach how to work constructively as a team and with our clients.  To help build a collaborative team environment, we work to develop and practice the following:

  1. Trust: Be honest; work to eliminate conflicts of interest; avoid talking behind each other’s back; trust teammates (you must trust them before they will trust you); give team members the benefit of the doubt.
  2. Clarify Roles: Review team member roles frequently; clarify responsibilities when action planning; relate team member expectations to team’s overall purpose; figure out ways to help each other.
  3. Communicate Openly & Effectively: Work to clear up misunderstandings quickly and accurately; seek to understand all perspectives; err on the side of over communicating; reinforce and recognize team member efforts. Learn to listen well.
  4. Appreciate Diversity of Ideas: Evaluate a new idea based on its merits; remember that reasonable people can and do differ with one another; avoid remarks that draw negative attention to a person’s unique characteristics; don’t ignore the differences among team members; try to learn as much as you can from others.
  5. Balance the Team’s Focus: Regularly review and evaluate the effectiveness of team meetings; design individual performance goals that emphasize both results and teamwork; praise individual effort; assign specific team members to monitor task needs and others to monitor relationship needs; hold team celebrations for achieving results.

Sprinkler System Water Damage After Fire

During a recent fire in a Cleveland high rise apartment building the sprinkler system disbursed water to extinguish the fire.  This helped limit the amount of fire damage done to the property.  It also undoubtably saved lives.  Unfortunately, the fire was on the 11th floor and water damaged units all the way to the first floor.  If not properly addressed, you could be left with a moisture problem.  Sprinkler system water damage can include wet drywall, carpet, and other building materials.  Contents in offices and apartments can be damaged such as couches, beds and even electronics can develop mold and mildew.

Hiring a water restoration professional, like SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South, is the first step to make sure all water damage is addressed and managed with skill to eliminate future damage. Some items may need to be replaced depending on the level of damage and whether or not they are able to be restored.
    • Removing the water: Water pumps, water extraction equipment, dehumidifiers, and air movers can be used to remove water efficiently and effectively.
    • Drying the area: Similar to removing the water, dehumidifiers and will be used to help make sure everything is thoroughly dry, in order to avoid mold and mildew from forming.

Safety Tips During a Lightning Storm

11/18/2020 (Permalink)

Lightning over Cleveland Lightning storms can be dangerous. Know what to do to help keep you safe.

Lightning is one of the leading causes of weather-related fatalities. Though the odds of being struck by lightning in a given year are only around 1 in 500,000, some factors can put you at greater risk for being struck.

Here are a few lightning safety tips:

  • Be aware. Check the forecast before participating in outdoor activities. If it calls for thunderstorms, postpone your trip or activity, or make sure adequate safe shelter is available.
  • Go indoors. Remember the phrase, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” Find a safe enclosed shelter when you hear thunder. Safe shelters include homes, offices, shopping centers, and hard-top vehicles with the windows rolled up.
  • Avoid windows, doors, porches and concrete. Do not lie on concrete floors and avoid leaning on concrete walls. Lighting can travel through any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.
  • Avoid water. Do not bathe, shower, wash dishes, or have any other contact with water during a thunderstorm because lightning can travel through a building’s plumbing.

SERVPRO Acts As A Rapid Response Team To Handle Restoration In Your Cuyahoga County Business

Helping Customer Facing Businesses with Commercial Flood Damage in Cuyahoga County

A backed-up sewer point in your place of work can force temporary closure while the issue is assessed and remediated. In a customer facing business, this can easily lead to a loss of revenue and usually occur during the busier times of the year. A timely restoration depends on using the right kind of service — one with experience and locally based technicians who can deal with Biohazard materials.

The idea of commercial flood damage in Northeast Ohio usually creates notions of extreme weather conditions, heavy rainfall or other natural events. Most often the problem can be traced back to older plumbing systems that have steadily deteriorated over time. SERVPRO technicians live and work in this area so they can recognize the unique problems faced by our business community.

As a start, we operate a 24-hour emergency call line. Our business communities know that they can reach us anytime, day or night. Following a quick assessment over the phone, SERVPRO can send a rapid response unit to your property immediately. Expertly trained technicians can find the source of damage quicker and put in place preventative measures to limit recurring problems.

When dealing with raw sewage, the priority is to wear the right equipment. Black Water can be harmful and is often loaded with pathogens.  SERVPRO technicians are given the correct clothing which allows them to remedy the situation quickly. The priority is to find the source of the problem and shut it off at the source.

Once we are confident that the source is dealt with, we can begin to remove the damages. Using submersible pumps alongside industrial-grade extractors waste is removed efficiently. After that, we can apply proprietary cleaning solutions and sanitizers to the affected zone. Where there is drywall, we can demolish it, clean behind it and then replace it with new drywall. Our last step is to thoroughly deodorize the affected area to make the damage "Like it never even happened."

If your business suffers unforeseen flood damage, contact SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South at 440-237-0077.

Pets are a valuable part of the family!

11/16/2020 (Permalink)

Two dogs sitting These cute dogs are too important not to practice fire safety with them.

Your pets are an important part of your family, and you surely would do whatever you can to keep them from harm’s way. To help keep your pet and the rest of your family safe from the dangers of a home fire, here are several important steps you should take to prevent and prepare your pet for the possibility of a fire emergency in your home in Independence, Solon or Strongsville.

Pet Fire Prevention

Like young children, your pets are not always aware of their surroundings and that their actions can result in a fire. Here are a few pet safety tips for preventing a fire:

  • Don’t leave pets unattended near space heaters or an open flame
  • Secure electrical cords that your dog might chew on
  • Remove stove knobs or use safety covers
  • Consider flameless candles or other candle alternatives

Pet Fire Preparedness

Once you have set up your home to help your pets from starting a fire emergency, you then need to start on your pet preparation and fire escape plan. When developing an evacuation plan with your family, identify which member of the family will be responsible for helping your pets get to safety, and make sure your dog comes when called.

Create a pet fire safety kit with medical supplies you might need to help your pet, some treats, and a leash or carrier. Also, add a pet alert window cling to a front window with information on all of your pets so firefighters can quickly find them.

While the tips in this guide can help you prevent a fire emergency and provide you with a plan for helping your pet if one does ever does occur, make sure to you don’t delay your escape if saving your pet isn’t possible. Once out of the house, never reenter until after firefighters extinguish the fire and the fire damage assessment team says your home is safe to enter.

Safely Use Candles in Your Ohio Home

11/11/2020 (Permalink)

Burning Candles As the holidays approach, candle safety is important to prevent fires

Avoid Candle Fires in Your Home

With warm light and pleasant fragrances, candles can be an easy way to create the atmosphere that you want in your Solon, Strongsville or Independence home. However, they can also become a safety hazard if they are not used properly. Candle fires are common, but the following tips can help you avoid them.

  1. Don’t Leave Burning Candles Unattended
It may seem like an annoyance to extinguish a candle every time you leave the room. However, leaving it burning could result in a candle fire if something gets too close to the flame or if it burns too low. It is best to blow out candles before going to sleep as well, even if you are in the same room.
  2. Keep Them Away from Flammable Items
When you are using a candle, you should be sure to have the area free of flammable objects. This can include papers as well as fabrics such as curtains and bedding. These types of items should be at least a foot away from any candles that are in use. Flammable liquids should be kept even further away.
  3. Keep Them Out of Reach of Pets and Children
Both children and pets often come with an excess of energy and curiosity. For this reason, it can be easy for them to inadvertently start a candle fire. Keep burning candles in an area that is not within reach, and do not leave them unsupervised.
  4. Use an Alternative
Perhaps the easiest way to prevent a fire is simply not to use candles at all. There are a variety of other ways that you can achieve a more relaxing home environment. If you are only interested in adding a nice scent to your home, a wax warmer is a great option. You can also buy battery-operated flameless candles that look and smell like the real thing.
While these tips can help you prevent an emergency, accidents can still occur. Whether it is small or large, fires often require smoke cleanup and some repairs. If this happens, a SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South can help return your home to its previous condition.

House Warming Safety Tips

11/11/2020 (Permalink)

Space Heater Heating your home is extremely important, but it's equally as important to do so safely.

Leaves have fallen is ...which means winter is just around the corner. Temperatures will begin to cool - especially at night - which means it will be time to fire up the fireplaces, turn on the furnace, and get that space heater out of storage. These are all great ways to keep homes toasty and warm, but they also increase the risk of residential fires. Be sure to follow the safety tips below when preparing to heat your home as we head into the Fall and Winter months:

Fireplaces

  • Inspect your chimney regularly for cracks and obstructions.
  • Don't let creosote build up in your chimney, as it could set off a roof fire.
  • Don't "over build" your fire using too much paper. You could ignite the soot in your chimney.
  • Never burn charcoal in your fireplace. It gives off deadly carbon monoxide.
  • Keep your damper open if there are hot ashes in your fireplace. Closing the damper could enable hot ashes to heat up and cause a damaging fire.
  • Let ashes cool in a sealed metal container.

Furnaces

  • Before you turn on your furnace, have it inspected by a qualified professional.
  • Make sure to check the condition of the automatic controls and emergency shutoffs.
  • If the walls and ceiling around your furnace feel too, add insulation or additional clearance space.
  • Keep all trash and combustibles away from the furnace.
  • Check your chimney for cracks or loose bricks.
  • Seal all unused flue openings with solid masonry.

Space Heaters

  • Make sure your space heater has a working safety light, alarm, automatic shut-off switch, and a cut-off device to prevent overheating.
  • Keep all objects, people and pets at least three feet away from the heater.
  • Never use a space heater in your bathroom. Water and electric appliances don't mix.

Heating your home is extremely important, but it's equally as important to do so safely.

Businesses should have a plan for natural disasters.

8/5/2020 (Permalink)

Anticipating future risks your business will be exposed to can be difficult due to many factors, but one thing business owners should certainly prepare for is a natural disaster.

While often not discussed in a business-focused manner, natural disasters have grown increasingly common in recent years and the way businesses handle them can often make or break future operations.

While there is no way to know for sure if a natural disaster will strike your commercial property, understanding your insurance coverage, action plan and the process of reopening afterwards will help ensure you can recover quickly if it does.

Disaster Preparations Especially for Business Owners

  1. Double-Check Your Insurance
Unfortunately, not every business policy is designed with natural disasters in mind. Often, excessive damages from natural causes will not be fully covered, leaving business owners to foot the bill for recovery from their own capital. However, starting this dialogue with your agent and researching the types of supplemental policies business owners may be eligible for will help you be certain you are fully covered.
  2. Create Your Action Plan
When you are faced with a scenario where you must evacuate from your business right away, it is important to have a plan in place and all necessary supplies in order to do so in as little time as possible. Documenting local shelters, evacuation routes and medical facilities will be helpful, as well as any key actions such as shutting down machinery on your way out the door.
  3. Rehearse Drills and Prepare Staff
It is important to not only make an emergency action plan for yourself but to also include your staff in the procedures. Once you have your details determined, sharing the plan with your employees and designating those in leadership roles to host regular and varied disaster drills with the team can help everyone stay safe and know what to do in a frightening scenario.
  4. Choose a Restoration Company to Work With
All aspects of disaster planning are important, but one vital thing is knowing how you will get your business property suitable to reopen following the disaster. The best way to do that is to work with a restoration company that has expertise in commercial jobs in order to get your damage restored and your doors reopened as quickly as possible.

If you need to pick a commercial restoration company that’s right for you, call us today! We can tell you all about what sets our process apart.

Fire Safety Around the House

4/23/2020 (Permalink)

Fire in fire pit Fire safety is important inside and outside of your home. Be careful and follow these tips!

Practicing fire safety is one of the best methods that individuals can use to keep themselves and their households protected against a disaster. Fires can happen for a plethora of reasons, but by implementing prevention tips, their likelihood of occurring is significantly reduced.

There is an abundance of fire safety information around the internet, but much of it is in different locations. In order to make researching and practicing fire safety easier, we put it together in one place for your ease of reference.

Tips to Know About Fire Safety

Frequently Check Smoke Detectors. Having a working smoke alarm system in your home is the top tip that experts recommend for fire safety. Smoke alarms significantly reduce the chance of becoming injured in a fire and can alert the entire household at once if it is time to escape.

Have a Fire Escape Plan. Evacuating the house quickly in the event that the smoke alarm sounds is essential due to how quickly fires can spread. Make sure everyone in the household is aware of their options for escape routes and rehearse your evacuation regularly.

Know How to Operate a Fire Extinguisher. Keeping a fire extinguisher stored in a convenient location and knowing how to use it will give you the power to put out a fire before it gets out of hand if it is safe to do so. Make sure to purchase the correct classification for the type of fire you are likely to experience.

Never Leave Flames Unattended. Many of us encounter open flames every day on a small scale, such as when a gas stove is turned on or a candle is lit. Though small, these flames still have a large potential for error, and they should never be left in a room unsupervised as they can quickly spread.

Keep a Closed-Door Policy. The deadliest fires are the ones that break out during the early morning hours, mostly due to the reduced reaction time of sleeping family members. However, one keyway to combat this is by closing bedroom doors before going to sleep. The door can slow down flames, allowing more time for everyone to execute the escape plan.

Flood Prevention Measures Your Business Should Have

4/22/2020 (Permalink)

A business in Solon or Strongsville may find itself in danger of flooding from high water. Fortunately, a local storm damage restoration service can help with restoration if damage does occur, but you may want to consider mitigation steps before the storm arrives. Here are three prevention systems your business may already have in place.

1. Sump Pumps

In some cases, the installation of a sump pump in a basement area may be able to help stop flooding. These units are designed to help regulate water flow, and when properly maintained can help keep an area free of pooling water.

2. Drainage

Another feature to consider for protecting your company property from high water is the drainage system. Proper drainage is important for flood prevention as it can help direct the flow of water away from the property. Drainage systems may include roof gutters, landscaping features such as a slope or rain garden, drainage ditches, and sewer drains. All of these provide safe areas for storm water to flow into instead of puddling around the business property.

3. Backup Systems

For a business having a backup system in place for any electronic data can be an important step for protecting the company against flooding. These systems may include cloud storage or a server where all the data can be stored independently from the actual computers. This way if the electronics themselves are damaged you know the data is safe. It’s also important to note that in some cases a restoration service may be able to restore the electronics depending on the damage severity.

It’s not uncommon for high water to lead to flooding. In many cases, a business property may already have some mitigation steps in place.  If flooding does occur SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South can help repair any damages.

Driving Tips on a Flooded Street

4/17/2020 (Permalink)

car going through water Automobiles and deep water don't mix. Be safe, Be smart!

When a bad storm hits Independence or Parma Heights, floodwaters can rise in no time. Rather than barrel down your flooded street, you should take a few precautions when there is a lot of water on the road. Here are some tips on staying safe if you must drive after a heavy storm.

Steer Clear of Standing Water

Many drivers tend to ignore travel tips and get overconfident when flash floods occur. They expect that standing water is harmless. The truth is that there can be many unseen hazards beneath the surface:

  • Branches or other debris
  • Potholes or washed out pavement
  • Moving water

It is unlikely that you are able to discern how safe it is to drive through water when you can’t see to the bottom of it. Even a few inches can stall your vehicle or even move it off the road. Flood damage experts recommend that you find an alternate route or just wait until the water has a chance to drain.

Slow down

A flooded street is not a racetrack. Even if the water is shallow enough to navigate, you still need to reduce your speed so that you don’t stall your vehicle or hydroplane. If your tires cause water to fan out to the side, you are probably going too fast to be safe.

Don’t Use Others as a Gauge

Just because other drivers make it through flooded roads, that doesn’t mean you should try it. Flood conditions change rapidly. The car in front of you could have inadvertently knocked some debris into your path that will tear up your vehicle. Rely on your own good judgment rather than the whims of other people.

A flooded street is not meant to be a challenge. When in doubt, it is better to turn around and go back the way you came than try to rush through standing water. Safety should always come first.

What to do about Mold!

3/2/2020 (Permalink)

Wet crawlspace and pipe Check your crawlspace often for signs of water and moisture

No homeowner ever wants to find black mold in their home in Northeast Ohio. Unfortunately, mold growth is a common issue many homeowners encounter. Many homeowners don't know about the correlation between rain and mold growth, which can be useful to understand.

1. Why Do You Find Mold in Your Home After Rain?

There are several reasons mold commonly appears in homes after heavy rains. In general, mold tends to grow in moist areas. When storms with high winds cause damage to a home's roof by removing or damaging roof shingles, this can leave parts of the home's roof exposed. As a result, a leak can easily occur, which can cause a moisture problem in the home. Additionally, rain can also result in high levels of humidity throughout the home if windows are left open, which can encourage mold to grow.

2. How Do You Complete Mold Cleanup?

If you do notice black mold in your home, you may want to try to clean the area yourself. However, this type of mold can spread easily and can often be hazardous. In general, it's wise to contact the mold remediation experts at SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South. Our specialists can help to safely contain the mold in order to prevent it from spreading throughout the home. Our professionals will use HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) air filters and negative air chambers throughout the remediation process.

3. How Can You Prevent Mold Growth in Your Home?

Fortunately, there are steps homeowners can take to prevent mold from growing in their homes. Though you can't change the weather, having annual roof inspections can alert you of potential issues that could eventually contribute to mold growth. It's also often useful to keep your home dry in order to discourage mold spores from growing. Finally, keeping your home clean and checking for any leaks can help to prevent the growth of mold.

Though the presence of black mold in your home can be alarming, it's often helpful to know what factors, such as rain, may contribute to mold growth. It can also be useful to know what mold cleanup entails and how to prevent the spread and growth of mold in your home.

Mold can be anywhere

1/27/2020 (Permalink)

Mold hanging from ceiling Mold is everywhere and SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South can help!

If you smell something musty in your home in Northeast, OH you may have a mold problem. It may not be immediately visible, though. Mold damage can occur on almost any surface, particularly if it is porous. All it needs to thrive is moisture and something organic to feed on. Here are some places to look for mold and tips on how to keep these places fungus free.

Where Is It?

Mold or mildew growth may happen anywhere there is too much moisture. Common places in your home where mold could grow include:

  • Drywall
  • Carpet
  • Furniture
  • Insulation
  • Draperies

Excess dust can also contribute to mold growth. A layer of dust on a surface gives spores in the air another place to attach and grow. Regular dusting can help keep fungus growth at bay.

How Is It Prevented?

Mold is everywhere. It gets inside your home by attaching to clothing, hair, pets and shoes. Once the spores are in this confined space, they start to look for a place to land and grow. Mold damage occurs when they find it.

The most effective way to prevent mold growth is by getting rid of the excess moisture in your home. Try to keep humidity levels between 40-50%. You can measure the humidity in your home with a device from your local hardware store. Make sure rooms that are prone to higher humidity, such as bathrooms and the kitchen, are properly ventilated for good air flow. When you notice a leak, call water remediation specialists immediately to dry and restore the area. Controlling moisture is vital to controlling the spread of mold.

As the homeowner, you play a key role in avoiding mold damage. Rid your home of excess moisture, and when you cannot, inspect all the surfaces where mold can grow to catch it at its beginning stages. By being vigilant about prevention, you can protect the air quality in your home.  If you have concerns call SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South to have one of their experts give you a professional evaluation at 440-237-0077.

Cold Snaps can lead to Cleveland Area Flooding

1/23/2020 (Permalink)

Semi trailer in snow Cold and Snow is here. So is SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South

At a faster rate than northernly areas of the country also hit with recent severe winter storms, properties in Northeast Ohio may experience the trauma of interior flooding due to frozen pipes. Other areas still cope with below zero temperatures, but their familiarity with long periods of below-freezing weather changes building practices to protect pipes. If you are caught with standing water inside your home because of cold temperatures in your southeastern home, we can help.

Plumbing rarely drains completely, and the water left in your Ohio pipes can freeze, surprising you with flood damage. As the water freezes inside the pipes it expands, and the resultant pressure causes metal or plastic conduit to split and crack and connections to fail. Unless the main is shut off, water continues to flow and pours out of the cracks. Your foundation or crawl space collects the moisture, and you need our professional crews and heavy-duty equipment to remove it and dry out your structure.

Speed is essential to a successful flood damage recovery after pipes burst. Water progressively harms building materials and contents. A quick soaking is usually endurable if the moisture is relatively clean and is dried out thoroughly. SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South crews are skilled at using pumps and extractors to remove the vast majority of flood waters, and then to switch to air movers, dehumidifiers, and sometimes heaters to reduce the moisture that remains soaked into framing, walls, ceilings, floors, and fixtures such as carpeting, wallpaper, and cabinets.

Water that stands or saturates structural components and possessions for more than 24 to 48 hours threatens to support the growth of mold. As SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South crews manage your flooding situation, we may pack out stored boxes or furnishings, providing you with an inventory and the chance to decide whether to pursue specialized drying solutions or to discard ruined items. We may offer freeze drying as a resource for wet documents and pictures and help to launder and dry clean waterlogged clothing, linens, and other items.

All our services are accomplished as swiftly as possible to give your belongings and home’s structure the best chance to become restored “Like it never even happened.” It also disrupts your and your family’s life minimally as well. We work to have the damaged pipes repaired fast, too, as failing to do so results in another flood. Throughout the restoration process, SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South is in constant contact with your insurance company to make sure your out of pocket costs are limited, as we assist you with your claims process.

SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South trains to respond successfully to flooding events, no matter what the cause of the disaster.

Be Smart and Implement a Cold Weather Plan!

Tractor tralier in snow If there is snow, SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South is prepared to go!

If your business is in an area prone to bad weather such as excessive snowfall, icy roads, flooding or other natural disasters, you need to be smart and plan for bad weather. Not only can inclement conditions be dangerous for your employees, but it can also be devastating to your building’s structure. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to minimize damage, protect employees and keep your Cleveland area business operating as usual even in an intense snowstorm. Here are a few key steps:

Have a Plan in Place

Some winter storms have been known to last for weeks at a time, and many are so severe that they prevent individuals from driving. While you cannot ask your employees to head to the office in the middle of a blizzard, you can ask them to work from home when the roads are icy and visibility is poor. Have a business plan in place that everyone can adhere to on snow days. This plan should include who is responsible for what when out of office, how work should be submitted and how and how often data backup should be performed.

Invest in Protection

Your business should have storm windows, storm doors, new and working gutters, lightning rods and storm drains. You should also invest in a generator or other source of backup power so that, at the very least, your heater can continue operating in a snow storm and prevent a pipe burst.

Remove snow

Snow that is allowed to accumulate on the roof or sidewalks can be dangerous to your building, employees and customers. Hire a snow removal company to keep your roof, sidewalks and areas around your building clear.

Watch the Weather

When a storm is in the forecast, shut the storm windows and doors, unplug appliances and electronics, back up your data and send your employees home. By planning ahead, you can prevent costly losses and unnecessary injuries.

Make sure your business is ready for bad winter weather. With the right planning, you can continue operating in a snowstorm.

House Fires: How to prevent them and what to do if you experience one in Cuyahoga County

The Best Way to Dry and Restore Water Damaged Hardwood Floors Solon

1/14/2020 (Permalink)

Salvaging hardwood floors from water damage in Northeast Ohio

While most insurance policies offer coverage for replacing floors, there are many situations where homeowners can save money by drying instead, especially with solid hardwood. Other types of flooring, including engineered hardwood and laminate, are more prone to structural damage, delamination, and other issues that make replacement preferable. Solid hardwood's durability makes it more salvageable and safer to reinstall.  The durability saves you time and costs when it comes to reinstallation, staining, and refinishing.

If a sudden pipe leak causes water damage to floors in your Raleigh residence, professional disaster mitigation technicians at SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South can restore your flooring to its preloss condition.

Let's say that, for this hypothetical scenario, your Southern Cuyahoga County had water damage from a leaking pipe. The pipe in question was in your recently finished basement and soaked the drywall panel in front of it. As you went to do your laundry that morning, you saw the water-spots on the wall and knew that a leak was coming from somewhere.

SERVPRO Cuyahoga South can get to work cleaning up the excess water using wet/dry vacuums, and then check out your washer and dryer for any visible damages. After the remediation is finished, it would not hurt to call an electrician if your washer or dryer was not performing ordinarily.

From there, SERVPRO Cuyahoga South could make cuts to the drywall and remove the damaged panel, to reduce the risk of mold growth from excess moisture. We can remove any ruined insulation and then set up drying equipment. Some devices you may see include:

    •    Dehumidifiers
    •    Air Movers

Protect your retail business and merchandise from water damage

SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South Responds Quickly When You Are Facing Water Damage at Your Business

Whether you are in the midst of seasonal shopping surge or planning clearance sales for less busy times, damage caused by water intrusion issues put a real cramp in your style. Business owners need a reputable and reliable company with which to partner when these crises become realities, and we stand ready 24/7 to help.

Fall and winter are critical selling times for your retail store. Commercial water damage in Northeast,Ohio can ruin your chances of capitalizing on the fall and winter seasons, and holiday shopping. Slow leaks take you by surprise, damaging stock and the structure of your store without you even realizing you have a problem until the water damage is advanced. We specialize in restoring water damage to structure and contents of commercial buildings, returning your shop to pre-water loss condition.

Water quietly but relentlessly seeps in from cracks in plumbing, clogged or improperly installed gutter and drain systems. SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South sees this kind of damage frequently, and we train our technicians both to discover the source of the water and to remediate the damage done. With slow leaks, we may not need the industrial pumps that outfit each service vehicle, but we do use our powerful water extractors after employing high-tech moisture meters to locate the pockets of pooled water that damage your storerooms and saturate carpeting drop by drop.

Moisture measurements inform our drying target determinations, and we use high-efficiency air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers to remove water as vapor from your building’s walls, flooring, and air. Failure to dry out the structure risks secondary damage from mold or continuous deterioration of building materials like drywall that break and crumble when waterlogged. SERVPRO’s focus is on restoration, not demolition and replacement. We also realize the importance of planning our tasks so that you can try to continue operations, even on a limited scale, as we work to make your sales floor look “Like it never even happened.”

Because loss of your stock is ruinous, we work quickly to inventory and then move wet products to a dry staging area, either on your premises or in an alternate space. You or your designated employees review the condition of the clothing and outdoor equipment. During the job, SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South is in constant communication with your insurance provider, developing the evidence for any claims needed, so your out of pocket loss is minimal.

SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South is a good fit for the business surprised by hidden leaks that threaten stock and your business in general. We are available at 440-237-0077 year round, any time of the day or night to help solve your water damage problems.

Fire Damage Facts

11/19/2019 (Permalink)

Fireman in front of fire truck SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South support the men and women who serve our communities to keep us safe!

Flames can cause the most visible damage to your property during a fire, smoke and soot are silent and sometimes invisible hazards that could cost lives.  Water is also a reason for damage after a fire. Even firefighters themselves may cause some damage before they can completely put out a fire. Here are 10 important things to know about fires.

1. In a fire, more people die from inhaling smoke than from the flames. Never think that if you avoid the flames you are safe. Always keep away from smoke.

2. Soot is a coating of fine, black dust created when wood, coal, or oil-based substances are burned.  These carbon particles float into the air and settle anywhere.  Inhaling soot can caused severe lung deficiencies or even death.

3. If soot contaminates items in your home or business, a fire restoration service provider like SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South must assess the damage to see if restoration is possible.

Need Fire Restoration Advice Or Services? Call SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South (440)237-0077

4.  The worst possible effect of soot is its tendency to cause cancer and cause serious defects in  newborns. Soot produces polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons are responsible for gene mutation for particular groups of genes. They can cause birth defects and increase the chances of getting cancer.

Water’s Good And Bad
5. Water’s great at putting out most fires but the water itself can cause great damage. You must make sure, after the fire is out, that your home or business is completely dried. If you don’t, mold, mildew, and other consequences will lead to further damage and loss. This is why SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South provides industrial dehumidifiers and air movers to dry saturated carpets, padding, furniture, and any other wet items.

6. Mold colonies can begin to grow just 48 hours after water damage occurs.  The combination of fire, water, and mold damage to your commercial property or home could result in a complete loss if not handled properly. See our posts about mold,  mold myths, and how to clean up mold.

7. Use caution if you decide to do some of the cleanup after a fire. Never start your cleaning process until you’re properly attired. Wear heavy-duty gloves, safety goggles, and a face mask. Carefully cover your nose and make sure your safety glasses have no place for dust or soot to get into your eyes.

Why Firefighters Break Windows And Cut Holes In Roofs
8. Firefighters are true heroes. However, they often must break windows and cut holes in the roof of buildings on fire. As a fire burns, the fire moves up and down and across, growing very fast. Firefighters break windows and cut holes in roofs to provide ventilation that slows the fire’s growth. Ventilation also helps get rid of dark smoke that makes it hard for firefighters to see where they’re going. The holes and broken windows help firefighters fight the fire more quickly. The bottom line is that breaking windows and cutting holes in roofs help save lives and property.

9. Firefighters will also cut holes in walls at times. That’s not about ventilation. It’s done so the fire department is sure that the fire is completely out. Fire departments don’t want to risk leaving a fire that’s not visible but is still active inside the walls or in other hidden places.

10. If you have a fire, get a copy of the fire report. In most areas, a fire report is a public document. Ask for it at the fire department or fire marshal’s office. The fire report will help you with information that your insurance company and other official offices may request.

Frozen pipes is bad news for your Southern Cuyahoga home

11/18/2019 (Permalink)

This winter has been an especially cold one so far with temperatures often dropping below the freezing level. Due to this, SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South has experienced a high volume of emergency water losses caused by freezing pipes, often leaving behind major disasters in homes and businesses.

 Be Prepared:

  • It is important to know where your water shut off is located. In the case of a frozen water pipe burst, you will first want to stop the source by shutting off the water immediately.
  • Insulate exposed pipes, especially if they are in unheated rooms.
  • Leave open bathroom and kitchen sink cabinet doors during extreme cold spells to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
  • During below zero weather, keep a slow trickle or constant drip of water flowing through faucets. Water is less likely to freeze if it is constantly traveling rather than sitting in the plumbing.
  • Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.
  • If you plan on being away from your property for an extended period of time, leave the heat on and set the thermostat to at least 55°F.DO NOT turn your heat off completely.

If You Discover Frozen Pipes:

  • First sign of freezing is reduced or slow moving water flow from a faucet.
  • Do not use an open flame device to try and thaw the pipes.
  • Methods you can try to unfreeze the pipes on your own include using a hair dryer, heating pad or hot towels, heat lamp or portable space heater.
  • Make sure to keep the faucet open when treating the frozen pipes.
  • Check additional pipes and faucets for freezing.

When a Frozen Pipe Bursts:

  • Shut off the water at the main valve.
  • Contact your local plumber to repair the broken pipe.

Call your local water restoration professionals, SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South.  A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly. If winter weather causes water damage to your home or business, call SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South at 440-237-0077.

Maintaining your Furnace Key to Winter Safety!

11/14/2019 (Permalink)

Furnace and technician gauge Routine maintenance on your furnace will kee you warm and safe.

Like many homeowners, you may wonder what you can do to keep your furnace well-maintained and when you should perform such maintenance. After all, a functioning furnace reduces the chance of a fire and related fire cleaning in your Southern Cuyahoga home.

Here are three tips for keeping your furnace in top shape throughout the year

1. Keep It Clean

Dirt is a troublesome yet common nuisance that can lead to furnace-related fires. The blower, motor and system itself all need regular cleaning to remove troublesome dirt and debris. Research how to clean your particular unit, or get help from a local professional. Leaving dirt to sit can cause your unit to malfunction and cause a fire-related issue.

2. Replace Filters

Your furnace filters should be replaced regularly. A good rule of thumb is to change them once before cold weather hits, and then once a month during the times that the furnace is in heavy use. Dirty filters can lead to situations that require fire cleaning, much like with other furnace components, and will also not function properly when you are relying on them to keep you and your family warm.

3. Perform Maintenance Early

One of the most important things to remember is that any repairs or other maintenance tasks need to be completed before the cold comes. Otherwise, you will risk using the furnace while it is not in top shape, possibly causing a fire and leading to smoke cleaning. You also will likely have an under-performing furnace that does not quite do its job.

Furnace maintenance is not exactly fun, but neither is a fire. You owe it to yourself and your wallet to take precautions against having a furnace malfunction at home. You will not only avoid fire cleaning in the future - you will also have better peace-of-mind knowing your furnace is ready to keep you heated.

Turkey in Deep Fryer Tips to keep the family safe while deep frying a turkey

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South wants to offer tips to keep everyone safe if they are deep frying their turkey.

  1. Keep outdoor fryers off decks, out of garages and a safe distance away from trees and other structures that may catch fire.
  2. Make sure the turkey is completely thawed and dry before cooking. Ice or water that mixes into the hot oil can cause flare-ups.
  3. Watch the weather. Never operate a fryer outdoors in the rain or snow.
  4. Place the fryer on a level surface, and avoid moving it once it's in use.
  5. Leave 2 feet between the tank and the burner when using a propane-powered fryer.
  6. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to avoid overfilling. Oil can ignite when it makes contact with the burner.
  7. Choose a smaller turkey for frying. A bird that's 8 to 10 pounds is best; pass on turkeys over 12 pounds.
  8. Never leave fryers unattended.
  9. Purchase a fryer with temperature controls, and watch the oil temperature carefully. Cooking oil that is heated beyond its smoke point can catch fire. If you notice the oil is smoking, turn the fryer off.
  10. Turn off the burner before lowering the turkey into the oil. Once the turkey is submerged, turn the burner on.
  11. Wear goggles to shield your eyes, use oven mitts to protect your hands and arms and keep an "ABC" or grease-rated fire extinguisher close by. Do not to use water or a garden hose on a fire related to Turkey Fryers.
  12. Do not stuff the turkey with stuffing or vegetables, also avoid water-based marinades.
  13. Keep children and pets away from the fryer at all times.
  14. Once finished, carefully remove the pot from the burner, place it on a level surface and cover to let the oil cool overnight before disposing.
  15. Opt for an oil-less fryer. This uses infrared heat, rather than oil, to cook the turkey. (And it’s healthier too!!)

Storm hits Cleveland Heights hard as Microburst.

Fallen tree crushes guard rail by road Storm uprooted trees, causing limbs to fall on roads in Northeast Ohio

Recent Cleveland Heights Storm is being called a microburst and SERVPRO of Southern Cuyahoga  County was there to help.

A microburst is a column of sinking air within a thunderstorm, typically less than 2 ½ miles in diameter, according to the NWS. During a microburst, wind speeds can reach or exceed 100 mph; that is roughly equivalent to an EF-1 tornado, the second-weakest category of tornado.

During this storm, the NWS measured strong winds high in the atmosphere. The thunderstorm pulled those winds down to ground level, causing the microburst.

The storm uprooted trees, causing limbs to fall on houses and cars. It also brought down power lines, leaving many residents without power in the immediate aftermath of the storm.

The Mess Water can make in Southern Cuyahoga

9/12/2019 (Permalink)

Mold on Ceiling If Water damage is not addressed immediately Mold can grow quickly

Water Damage in Northeast Ohio is a serious property issue that homeowners should be fully cognizant of. By getting basic information about water damage and how to quickly eliminate it, you can help ensure that your residential property remains in excellent condition.

Where Does Water Damage Come From?

Water damage is a hazard that can result from many sources. First, water damage can arise as a result of natural disasters like hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, fires, etc. Additionally, water damage can result from unattended roof leaks, broken water lines, and sewer backups. Additionally, water . damage can result from flooding that generates rising waters which put your property underwater for several hours. In the event that the water contains any sewage, you and your loved ones will be exposed to several health hazards.

Structural and Property Damages

One of the property challenges that results from water damage is structural issues. When your ceilings, walls, and floors are exposed to water, the structure of your property can become weak. Additionally, water has the ability to damage several of the structural elements on your property. These damages can cost you thousands of dollars in repairs.

Mold Growth

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), cleaning and drying your property within 24 to 48 hours of water damage is necessary for the prevention of mold growth. However, it's important to know that while you can start these processes to help eliminate or prevent mold, the fungus can grow in places you can't see. Some of these places include along ceilings and baseboards, underneath wallpaper, and behind the drywall.

The Health Hazards Of Mold Exposure

Removing mold from your property as quickly and efficiently as possible is critical for the prevention of health hazards. Individuals who are repeatedly exposed to mold can suffer from a plethora of health issues, some of which include respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and asthma. Because the cleanup process can result in mold exposure, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) instruct individuals to wear an N-95 breathing mask during the procedure. Using eye protection and gloves is also advised.

Let SERVPRO Assist You Now!

SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South serves the communities of Strongsville, Berea, Parma Heights, Middleburg Heights, Olmsted Falls, North Royalton and the surrounding communities. Properties with water damage rely on local technicians to perform a vital assessment, remediation, and restoration services. Contents and structure that suffers prolonged exposure to moisture can cause a chain of events which could result in permanent damages.

SERVPRO has technicians with qualifications from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certifications (IICRC), an internationally recognized awarding body.  Certification from the IICRC means SERVPRO technicians can make professional, informed assessments of property damages. To make those evaluations, our technician's can use a variety of moisture measuring equipment to get a full picture of the extent of the issue. By measuring the scale of damage, we can ensure our work is as efficient as possible and that they prevent secondary issues from arising after treatment.

Moisture meters can penetrate surfaces and assess saturation levels. This tool is useful if the property has been exposed to moisture for several hours or longer. Thermal imaging cameras use infrared to allow a restorer to spot moisture that may not be visible to the eye such as behind walls or under cabinets. Thermal Hygrometers measure relative humidity and can help ensure microbial growth is kept under control throughout the service.

SERVPRO of Cuyahoga South does calculated assessments to ensure your property’s restoration is tailored to its needs.  Complete documentation of all work performed, including pictures and moisture readings are recorded throughout the service and is passed on to your insurance company to process your claim.

Michal Fosdick is the Owner/President of SERVPRO of Southern Cuyahoga County. Even though the circumstances around a water or fire loss are tough and the pace is often hectic, she is absolutely on fire for what she does daily (pun intended).  This is the case, even with the high of number of flaming chain saws she always needs to juggle. These include soothing worried customers, organizing home furnishings in our storage facilities, putting finishing touches on a proposal, coordinating financing for the purchase of needed equipment, talking to prospective hires and/or paying the bills.  Regardless of the circumstances, she keeps our business moving forward. What’s more, Michal’s sincere enthusiasm for her people means that she does all this without being heavy-handed or micromanaging the team. Straight forward, down to earth and accessible, Michal is well known for her enthused, “make it right every time”, drive for SERVPRO of Southern Cuyahoga County.

Dennis Fosdick, Jr. is our VP and son of our President, Michal Fosdick. This desire, along with his infectious can-do attitude, strong business vision, customer centered mindset and focus on improving performance have been central to the growth of our franchise group since 2015. Southern Cuyahoga County Homeowners: Tips on How to Deep Fry a Turkey Safely

11/20/2018 (Permalink)

Thanksgiving is a time for family traditions and favorite recipes. Protect yourself, your guests, and home with these helpful safety tips.

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, here are some great tips to keep everyone safe if they are deep frying their turkey.

Furnace Maintenance Tips For Your Southern Cuyahoga Home

11/19/2018 (Permalink)

Keep your furnace clean and running efficiently

Cuyahoga County Smoke and Soot Cleanup

man and his dog in flood waters If you have water or storm damage in Summit County or Lake Township, call the experts at SERVPRO of SE Summit County/Lake Township today!

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Southern Cuyahoga County, will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.
